NATURAL HISTORY
Asclepias syriaca
Common milkweed is native to North America and an important species to pollinators. The genus name, Asclepias, commemorates Asklepios, the Greek god of medicine because many plants in the milkweed family have been used for medicinal purposes over time. Milkweed loves sun and helps to rehabilitate areas that have been disturbed.
Milkweed is the host plant of monarch caterpillars. Compounds present in milkweed plants (and especially high in common milkweed), glycosides, make monarch larvae and adult butterflies toxic to birds and deter predation.
